Review: With Lots of Love

With Lots of Love With Lots of Love by Jenny Torres Sanchez
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

Book provided to me by the publisher.

Little Rocio recently moved to America, but she can't stop thinking about her grandma and cousins left behind in Central America. On her birthday, it's like her Abuela reads her mind and sends her a pinata to remind her of home, as well as a photograph of the store Rocio loves with her family in front of it. I loved the simplicity of the book--Rocio never says that she doesn't her new home or her immediate family--she just misses the tasty treats and family members back home. Illustrations are bright and colorful--love how the scent swirls of Abuela's cooking have little hearts in them! All grandmas bake with love. :)

Review: The Silence of Bones

The Silence of Bones The Silence of Bones by June Hur
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wish PBS would turn this into a Masterpiece Mystery movie--perfect period drama! It's rare I read a book about a time period that I know nothing about, but this YA book (could have been published adult) was about a new time and location (Seoul, 1800) to me. I had no idea that Catholics were persecuted during that time period and I love how the main character is a young servant girl with no power in society. The setting details were fantastic! Makes me want to visit Korea. And this book makes me want to read what else Hur has written. Excellent historical fiction.
